Guess what? XP's System Restore actually works! My reaction to this discovery is twofold:

(a) Wow! A Microsoft product that actually does what it says it will!
(b) Phew! That was a close one!

I shall not regale you with all the gory details, principally because they involve a simple fault made worse by foolish and precipitate action on my part...

...let's just say pulling the plug was a dumb idea.
