The mandolin diaries, part 3
Feb. 12th, 2007 12:01 pmMy mandolin finally arrived the other day - at the fourth attempt to deliver it, as they used one of those courier firms with a policy of trying to deliver to residential addresses during office hours. I eventually persuaded them to turn up at 8 a.m. last Monday, so I've now had it a week.
It's not at all bad for the price. A few rough edges round the soundholes, and the scratchplate seems to scratch rather easily itself, but it sounds OK, holds its tuning and plays comfortably. I had one slight problem with a string that was buzzing, but it was only doing it when played open, so I reasoned there must be something up with the nut. Loosened the string, lifted it out of the groove, scraped it out with a fingernail and blew on it, put the string back, and it was fine. Bit of fluff or something.
Might get some more books on playing, but I've also found these online lessons. And tablature for 289 traditional tunes!
